He began his career with small television roles and made his film debut in Space Camp which has led to lead roles in films such as Gladiator, Buffalo Soldiers, Ladder 49 and We Own The Night. He won a Golden Globe Award and received an Academy Award Nomination for Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role for his portayal of Johnny Cash in Walk The Line. Phoenix and his co-star Reese Witherspoon performed and sung all the music on the Walk The Line soundtrack for which they won a Grammy Award.
Joaquin Phoenix is an active supporter of a large number of charities including The Lunchbox Fund, Chrysalis and The Foundation for AIDS Research. He is an activist for animal rights supporting organizations such as PETA and In Defense of Animals.
