Fast Facts : Edward Regan Murphy was born in Brooklyn on April 3, 1961 and grew up in Roosevelt, New York. He began his career as a stand-up comedian writing and performing around the age of 15. He performed stand-up at the same Comedy Club as Robin Williams and Whoopi Goldberg and joined the cast of Saturday Night Live for four seasons. His film debut was in the movie 48 Hrs which led to starring roles in movies such as the Beverly Hills Cop series, Trading Places and Coming To America. He received a Golden Globe Award and an Academy Award Nomination for Best Actor in a Supporting Role in Dreamgirls.
As an actor, writer, director and producer, Murphy has become the highest grossing entertainer in the history of the motion picture industry.
Eddie Murphy is an active supporter of a large variety of charitable organiztions including The AIDS Foundation, the American Cancer Society and The Screen Actor’s Guild Foundation. He started the Yeah! Foundation which supports causes that help the homeless and provides school scholarships.
